Two suspects, arrested in connection with the attempted assassination of Advocate Coreth Naude, are set to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The men, aged 28 and 29, were apprehended in December following an investigation into the shooting of Naude outside an uMhlanga hotel on July 18.
Naude, who had been handling a high-profile tax investigation involving controversial Durban businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, was ambushed by two armed men as she was driving into the hotel where she was staying. The attackers fired multiple shots at her vehicle, leaving Naude with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Despite the severity of the attack, she managed to drive into the hotelβs parking lot, where she received medical attention before being rushed to the hospital.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the suspects fled the scene in a silver Toyota Corolla. The case was assigned to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime: Murder and Robbery Unit, which launched an intensive investigation that eventually traced the suspects to the Western Cape. The two men were arrested in separate locations: Mitchellβs Plain and Milnerton.
The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the case, which had left many questioning the motives behind the attack on Naude, given her involvement in the ongoing investigation into Mkhizeβs financial dealings. Both suspects have already appeared in court on December 23, and Fridayβs court appearance will likely shed more light on the charges they face.
As the case progresses, further details are expected to emerge, particularly regarding the links between Naudeβs work and the attempt on her life. For now, the investigation into this violent incident continues to unfold, raising questions about the potential motives behind such an audacious attack.
