In a dramatic turn of events, three security guards were arrested on January 15, 2025, by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on suspicion of being involved in a string of car hijackings in Tshwane. The suspects, who were reportedly part of a hijacking syndicate, were apprehended in Pretoria Central following a coordinated operation by multiple law enforcement agencies.

The arrest came after a recent hijacking incident in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, where a Volkswagen Golf GTI was stolen. SAPS, in collaboration with the Highway Patrol Unity, Tracker Connect, Cap Specialised Operations, and the ICB Insurance Crime Bureau, tracked the stolen vehicle to Pretoria. Upon stopping the car, officers discovered that the vehicle had been fitted with false registration plates. Inside, they found a firearm and large quantities of ammunition, further linking the suspects to illegal activities.

The three suspects, all employed as security guards, were arrested at the scene and will face charges related to car hijacking, possession of a firearm, and other offenses. Their arrest has raised concerns, as many South Africans have previously alleged that security guards are increasingly becoming involved in criminal activities, including hijackings.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates Court in the coming days, where they will face the full force of the law. The case has drawn significant attention, with many calling for a deeper investigation into potential links between security companies and criminal syndicates operating in the region.
