A 61-year-old man from Motantanyane village in Limpopo has been arrested following an unsettling incident involving a woman he had offered a ride home. The event, which took place on Sunday, January 12, at around 9:30 pm, has drawn attention to concerns around personal safety.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the man gave the woman a lift from a local tavern. However, during the journey, he unexpectedly drove to his own residence instead of taking her home. Once there, he allegedly threatened her with a firearm, leading to a troubling series of events.
Fortunately, the woman was able to escape and sought assistance from nearby residents before reporting the incident to the authorities. Acting swiftly on the information provided, the police launched an operation to locate the man. They managed to track him down to his home in Motantanyane village.
Upon searching the residence, officers discovered an unlicensed firearm hidden under the manβs pillow. After further investigation, it was revealed that the weapon was actually a pellet gun, not a real firearm as initially believed.
The suspect was promptly arrested and now faces charges of sexual assault and pointing a firearm. He is expected to appear before the Thabamoopo Magistrateβs Court in the near future.
The police have praised the victim for her courage in escaping and reporting the incident, highlighting the importance of community awareness and safety.
