A tombstone manufacturer and three accomplices have been arrested for their involvement in a disturbing grave robbing scheme at Phumulani Cemetery in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni. The group was apprehended while removing granite stones from the cemetery, which were reportedly stolen from several burial sites across the region. The suspects would refurbish these stolen granite slabs and resell them, exploiting the lack of proper security in some cemetery areas. The main suspect confessed to working with his team in this illegal operation, taking advantage of gaps in the cemetery’s fence and the absence of regular patrols.
Residents are understandably outraged by the thefts, which have resulted in damaged graves and missing tombstones. One grave at Phumulani Cemetery was found with its granite slab removed, and other headstones were also gone. Locals have expressed frustration with the thieves’ ability to operate undetected, as they often pose as visitors to non-existent relatives while scouting for valuable grave markers. The community is calling for increased security measures and stronger enforcement to protect these sacred spaces.
Ekurhuleni Municipality has commended the police for their swift action in apprehending the suspects. Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini highlighted the significance of this breakthrough, emphasizing that graveyards, once revered as sacred places, are no longer immune to criminal activity. He urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in bringing other perpetrators to justice. The police have confirmed that four suspects are now in custody, and investigations are ongoing.
