FUMING Alexandra residents in the north of Joburg have demolished a spaza shop. The spaza is believed to be the shop where a 10-year-old girl bought snacks which allegedly took her life.Lesedi Maaboyi died over the weekend after allegedly consuming the contaminated snacks.
Her mum and little brother were admitted to hospital after allegedly eating the same snacks.
Residents said they’re tired of these incidents repeating themselves.
“What happened is very sad. The building needs to be demolished. We no longer want it. By demolishing it, we are sending a strong message to the police who take bribes from shop owners. We are tired. Enough is enough!” said a resident.
Lesediβs father, Joshua Maaboyi, said on Saturday, 2 November, his daughter walked through the door holding a packet of snacks and asked her mum to smell it.
“The mum smelled the snacks and smelled a pack that her little brother was holding. She then said the snacks were not smelling good. I then told my daughter to throw them away because they were not smelling good. She then said she will take it back to the shop,β Joshua said.
The kids went out to play and as they were playing, Lesedi complained of stomach cramps to the point of almost collapsing while standing.
The father said that he rushed Lesedi to a clinic and on their way, she kept on saying that she was choking.
“By the time we approached the clinic, her voice was now too low, and she was struggling to breathe,” he said.
Upon their arrival at the clinic, her father carried her from the car and rushed inside the clinic where she was attended to immediately.
“As the nurses were attending Lesedi, her mum started complaining about stomach cramps. As I was focusing on that, we received the bad news that our daughter has died.”
