Kutullo Kekana, a respected sangoma from Kgabalatsane in North West, was left bruised and shaken after a violent altercation with his neighbor’s friends on Sunday, October 6, 2024. The incident reportedly stemmed from an accusation that Kekana had encroached on his neighbor’s property, sparking a brutal attack that left him with both physical injuries and lingering trauma.
Kekana recalls the terrifying encounter vividly. “I was doing my laundry when three men stormed into my yard,” he shared. “They kicked and punched me, accusing me of overstepping my boundary. My mouth was badly bruised, and I’m still nursing internal injuries.” Despite his attempts to explain, his attackers continued to kick him, interpreting his words as disrespect. It was only after his desperate screams drew the attention of nearby neighbors that the assailants fled.
Now haunted by the ordeal, Kekana experiences fear whenever he sees a large stone, a painful reminder of the incident. His ancestral guides, or amadlozi, have reassured him to remain hopeful and trust that justice will be served. Determined to see accountability, Kekana is calling on the law to pursue those responsible. North West Police spokeswoman Colonel Adéle Myburgh confirmed that a case of common assault is under investigation, although no arrests have been made yet.
