A South African taxi driver has been arrested after allegedly attempting to smuggle 25 undocumented foreign nationals, including 20 children, into the country through the Beitbridge port of entry. The operation was carried out by the Border Management Authority (BMA) on Monday.

According to BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi, the minibus taxi was intercepted while transporting the group under dangerous and inhumane conditions. The youngest child among the passengers was just five years old. The passengers, mostly minors, were unlawfully smuggled into South Africa in violation of immigration laws.

The vehicle was immediately impounded, and the driver was arrested and charged accordingly. A substantial conveyance fine of R375,000 was issued under the Immigration Act. The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.

In line with established protocols, the children were safely handed over to Zimbabwean child welfare authorities for proper care and protection. BMA Acting Commissioner Jane Thupana condemned the operation, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks that exploit vulnerable people, especially children.

“This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of the BMA to safeguard the integrity of South Africa’s borders and protect human dignity. Human trafficking and smuggling activities pose a serious threat to national security and the well-being of individuals, particularly minors,” said Thupana.

The BMA has pledged to continue working closely with other law enforcement agencies to combat illegal activities and prevent future instances of human trafficking and border smuggling.
