Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker shared insights into their tactical approach following their impressive victory over Orlando Pirates in the Premier Soccer League over the weekend. The Stellies boss explained how his team executed their game plan to overcome the former league leaders at Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Devin Titus was the hero of the day, scoring the only goal that secured Stellenbosch’s win and handed Pirates their first defeat in the Betway Premiership this season. The victory saw Stellenbosch climb into the top three on the league table, while Pirates missed the chance to reclaim the top spot from Mamelodi Sundowns, who defeated Sekhukhune United to remain at the summit.
Speaking after the match, Barker elaborated on the strategy that neutralized the threats posed by Orlando Pirates youngsters Relebohile Mofokeng and Nkota.
“Pirates started strongly in the first five to 10 minutes,” Barker remarked. “We had anticipated certain scenarios, but Mofokeng and Nkota played narrowly and managed to exploit spaces behind our midfield, causing us some issues. However, after about 10 to 15 minutes, we adapted. Genino Palace dropped deeper to handle Mofokeng, while our full-backs and wide midfielders ensured they closed down the Pirates’ full-backs before they reached dangerous areas in the final third.”
This adjustment proved pivotal in Stellenbosch’s disciplined and focused performance, earning them a crucial three points.
