While Orlando Pirates remain mathematically in the title race, the chances of Mamelodi Sundowns slipping up and losing the league title seem slim. As things stand, the Buccaneers are 12 points behind Sundowns but have three games in hand, offering a glimmer of hope, though it’s still an uphill battle.
Pirates Eye South American Striker to Strengthen Attack
One area where Orlando Pirates have been outshone by Sundowns this season is in the striking department. While Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro (13 goals), Iqram Rayners (9 goals), and Peter Shalulile (6 goals) have been firing on all cylinders, Pirates strikers Tshegofatso Mabasa (5 goals) and Evidence Makgopa (4 goals) have not quite delivered at the same level.
However, reports suggest that Orlando Pirates are looking to address this gap in their squad by signing 26-year-old Brazilian striker Raphael Lopes in the upcoming transfer window. Lopes, who currently plays for Hamrun Spartans in Malta after several years in the Brazilian lower leagues, could be offered to Pirates first.
According to Soccer Laduma sources, the Buccaneers are expected to be given the first opportunity to sign Lopes when the transfer window opens.
