Orlando Pirates have reportedly decided to withdraw star player Mbekezeli Mbokazi from the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
The 19-year-old had been selected to represent South Africa in the tournament, which will take place in Egypt starting on April 27, 2025. However, due to important fixtures ahead for the Buccaneers, the club has made the decision to keep him. Mbokazi was originally set to join the U-20 camp in Johannesburg on April 20, but with Orlando Pirates gearing up for crucial matches, including the high-stakes Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs in both the Betway Premiership and the Nedbank Cup final, the club opted to retain his services.
Additionally, Shandre Campbell, another key player, will also miss the tournament as Club Brugge in Belgium did not release him, as the event falls outside the FIFA International calendar.
Mbokazi’s absence from the U-20 AFCON means Orlando Pirates will have their defensive rock available for the upcoming crucial encounters. Since making his debut for the club, the 19-year-old has been a key figure in their defense, and the team has yet to lose a match with him in the lineup.
