Orlando Pirates are facing significant defensive challenges, a scenario few would have predicted just weeks ago.

Sesane Out for the Season
The injury to standout defender Thabiso Sesane has dealt a heavy blow to Orlando Pirates. The 24-year-old ruptured a tendon during their narrow 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune and will require surgery, sidelining him for at least four months. Sesane had become a key player in Jose Riveiro’s defense, and his absence will be felt deeply.

Depth in Defense to Be Tested
While Pirates do have quality backups, including Nkosinathi Sibisi, Olisa Ndah, Tapelo Xoki, and club captain Innocent Maela, the loss of Sesane raises concerns about their defensive depth. Recently, Sibisi’s form has been shaky, which only adds to the team’s worries. Some fans, like Masenyani on X, have suggested resting Sibisi and giving Ndah and Maela a chance, while Xoki can contribute by collecting the ball from the back.

Former Chiefs Player on Pirates’ Radar
Reports from Soccer-Laduma indicate that Pirates are looking at Omega Mdaka as a cost-effective option to replace their primary target, Fawaaz Basadien. Mdaka, 21, joined Stellenbosch in 2024 and has quickly become a crucial player for them, making a solid impact in both the league and other competitions.

Nedbank Cup and League Fixtures Ahead
Pirates’ next challenge is a Nedbank Cup Round of 16 match against Baroka at home on Saturday, February 15 at 15:00. Following that, they’ll return to the Betway Premiership for a clash against Golden Arrows on Wednesday, February 19 at 19:30. Sadly, Sesane will be unavailable for both fixtures.

Mofokeng’s Big Money Move Rejected
In a surprising turn, Orlando Pirates reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from Egyptian giants Zamalek, who were willing to pay R25.8 million for the talented Relebohile Mofokeng. The young Bafana star, who has been pivotal for Pirates with 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions, remains a central figure for the Sea Robbers this season.
