Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Siyabonga Nomvethe has shared his thoughts on the club’s recent signings, including Thabo Cele.
The 28-year-old Cele was one of three new players brought in, alongside Makabi Lilepo and Tashreeq Morris. Nomvethe has praised Morris for his work ethic and aggressive style of play.
“Morris is a hardworking player who never gives up. He keeps fighting and brings that aggression you expect from a striker,” Nomvethe told SNL24. “He’s the type of player who can step up, especially in the final moments of a game. He has the ability to score, even with some remarkable goals. He’s a solid addition to the team. Up front, we need someone energetic to relieve some of the pressure on our younger players, who we’re relying on a bit too much right now.”
When it comes to Cele, Nomvethe believes the Bafana midfielder will bring much-needed experience to Chiefs.
“Thabo Cele has played in Europe, so he brings valuable experience with him. We expect a lot from him because he’s been overseas. At a big club like Kaizer Chiefs, there’s no room for complacency. In modern football, teams are always looking for goalscorers, and a winger should be capable of scoring too—it’s not just the striker’s job,” Nomvethe said.
He also mentioned that Lilepo will need to work hard to earn a spot, especially with competition from players like Christian Saile. “Lilepo will need to push himself to outperform Saile,” he added. “Overall, I’m happy with the signings. It’s been 10 years since Chiefs last lifted a trophy, and these players need to put in the effort. There’s still a lot of the season left.”
Of the three new signings, Cele stands out as the biggest addition. However, it’s worth noting that the midfielder has not played competitive football for several months.
