Former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back Mokete Tsotetsi has praised the defensive quality of the current Chiefs squad but believes that the team’s backline needs more time to gel if they are to reach their full potential. Tsotetsi, a former stalwart in the heart of the Chiefs defense, has shared his thoughts on the Soweto giants’ current defensive setup and highlighted that the individual quality is undeniable, but cohesion remains the key to success.

Kaizer Chiefs have made some strong acquisitions in recent transfer windows, bringing in players with impressive defensive resumes. Despite having defenders with the ability to dominate the opposition, Tsotetsi feels that the key to a solid defense lies in understanding each other’s movements and playing as a unified unit.

“The defenders they have right now are some of the best in the league,” Tsotetsi said. “But as we all know, it’s not just about individual talent. The most important thing is how well they can gel together as a defensive unit. It’s crucial for any team, especially a big club like Kaizer Chiefs, to have a defense that is in sync.”

Tsotetsi pointed out that, while Chiefs have the players capable of dominating defensively, the lack of consistency in the defensive line-up and the adjustment to new tactical instructions could be limiting their effectiveness. He explained that building chemistry between defenders takes time and regular playing experience together, especially in high-pressure matches.

“Every great defense starts with communication and understanding between the centre-backs, full-backs, and the goalkeeper. They need time to bond and develop that intuitive sense of when to step up or drop back,” Tsotetsi added. “Once that comes together, I have no doubt they can be one of the most formidable defensive units in the league.”

While Chiefs have made some notable improvements this season, Tsotetsi remains optimistic that, with more time on the pitch, the team’s defense will strengthen, allowing them to challenge for top honors in both domestic and continental competitions. He concluded by expressing confidence in the team’s potential, adding that their defense, once fully gelled, will be one of their strongest assets.

The pressure will be on Chiefs’ defenders to prove their worth as the season progresses, with supporters eagerly waiting for the team to deliver a more consistent and well-organized defensive performance.
