Mamelodi Sundowns’ key players, defender Khuliso Mudau and midfielder Teboho Mokoena, have been missing from recent matchday squads, raising questions among fans about their absence. With Sundowns performing at a high level, many have wondered why these two regulars haven’t been as visible under coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
Speaking at a joint press conference ahead of their much-anticipated clash with Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership, Mngqithi clarified that Mudau and Mokoena are still very much part of the squad and are competing for their places. He stressed that their exclusion isn’t due to fitness or form, but rather the intense competition within the squad.
“Sundowns is a team full of top-quality players, and everyone is pushing hard to be on the field,” Mngqithi explained. “Mudau and Mokoena have always been part of the selection process, and their absence in recent games is just down to the choices we’ve had to make. Both are fit, competing, and ready to step in at any time. With a team this deep, it’s about making decisions that fit each match.”
As for facing Kaizer Chiefs so early in the season, Mngqithi pointed out that it’s become a regular occurrence in the past five years. “It’s not unusual to meet Chiefs in one of the first few games of the season. This fixture has always come early, whether as the second or third game in the last few seasons. But that’s what makes it exciting for the players and the fans alike. Both teams are highly motivated, and the fans love these early season showdowns.”
The showdown between Chiefs and Sundowns is set for Saturday at FNB Stadium, with kickoff at 3:00 PM.
