Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has broken his silence regarding Steve Komphela’s retention amid the recent shake-up within the Brazilians’ technical team. The reshuffle saw Mngqithi part ways with the club after over a decade of service, leaving Komphela as one of the few to maintain his position.

Mngqithi, who joined Sundowns in 2013 and worked his way from assistant coach to head coach, shared his views on the decision to keep Komphela on board during a candid interview. Despite the changes, Mngqithi expressed no bitterness and maintained that Komphela’s extensive experience and tactical acumen justified his continued role with the reigning DStv Premiership champions.

“Steve is one of the best minds in South African football,” Mngqithi said. “He’s been in the game for decades, and his understanding of player management and tactics makes him an asset to any team. If the club decided to keep him, it shows they value what he brings to the table.”

Mngqithi also praised the culture at Sundowns, emphasizing that the club values long-term development over short-term fixes. He believes that retaining Komphela aligns with Sundowns’ vision of building a strong and cohesive technical structure.

“I have no hard feelings about leaving the club,” Mngqithi added. “My time there was filled with incredible memories, and I’m proud of what we achieved together. I wish the team, and Steve in particular, all the best as they continue chasing greatness.”

Komphela, known for his calm demeanor and emphasis on discipline, has been with Sundowns since 2020. He initially served as a senior coach under the co-coaching model that included Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena. The structure was eventually dissolved, with Mokwena assuming sole head coach duties.

Mngqithi’s departure marks the end of an era for Sundowns, but his legacy remains intact. During his tenure, the team secured numerous league titles and continental glory, establishing itself as a powerhouse in African football.

As Sundowns prepare for the remainder of the season, Komphela’s role will be pivotal in maintaining their dominance in domestic competitions and pushing for success in the CAF Champions League. Meanwhile, Mngqithi is expected to explore new coaching opportunities, with several clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.

Fans will be eager to see how Sundowns progress under their revamped technical team and whether Komphela’s influence can help sustain the club’s winning ways.
