Mamelodi Sundowns legend Sello “Page” Mahlangu has voiced his support for the club’s decision to part ways with coach Manqoba Mngqithi, stating that the former coach’s biggest mistake was failing to adapt to the changing dynamics of the team.
Mngqithi, who had a successful stint at Sundowns, was dismissed after a series of disappointing results, including a 1-1 draw against AS FAR Rabat in the CAF Champions League. Although Mngqithi had helped build a strong Sundowns squad, Mahlangu believes that the team’s current needs and the evolving demands of the club required a fresh approach.
In an interview, Mahlangu highlighted that the changes in the team’s structure and tactics under Mngqithi had started to show signs of stagnation. He argued that while Mngqithi had great tactical knowledge, the lack of flexibility in adapting to new challenges ultimately led to his downfall.
“The game is constantly evolving, and sometimes, you have to change with it. Manqoba stuck to his way of doing things for too long, and it wasn’t working anymore. Sundowns needed someone who could bring in fresh ideas and adjust to the times,” Mahlangu explained.
He also praised the leadership at Sundowns for their decision to make a change, recognizing the club’s ambition to continue dominating both domestically and on the continental stage. “Sundowns is a big club, and their aspirations are even bigger. The club needs to be led by a coach who can adapt quickly to challenges and push the team to greater heights. I think the management made the right decision,” he added.
Mngqithi’s departure marks the end of an era at Sundowns, but Mahlangu is confident that the club’s future remains bright under new leadership. With Sundowns looking to make a fresh start, the search for a new coach to lead the team to more success continues.
