South African football fans are mourning the death of Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe, a legendary former Orlando Pirates and Pretoria Callies midfielder. The 71-year-old passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at his home in Atteridgeville after battling a long illness.
Moripe’s illustrious career in football spanned the 1970s and 1980s. Known for his exceptional skill, he played for prominent clubs such as Pretoria Callies and Orlando Pirates and had a stint in Hong Kong. His remarkable contributions to the sport are commemorated by the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, a 30,000-seater arena in Atteridgeville that serves as the home ground for Mamelodi Sundowns.
Fans and the football community took to social media to honor Moripe, reflecting on his legacy and expressing their sorrow over his passing. Many emphasized the importance of celebrating his achievements during his lifetime.
David Mangwana remarked, “Rest in peace, Ntate Ditokitoki. At least, thanks to Motsepe, you were honored while alive.”
Bricks Makhubela simply stated, “Rest in Peace ‘Master’ of football.”
Moh Lekganyane expressed, “Condolences to the family. At least he saw the stadium named after him. We did celebrate him while he was still alive.”
Bra Bob Hudson added, “May his soul rest in peace. The pride of Pheli.”
Earlier this year, former Kaizer Chiefs and TS Galaxy star Bernard Parker visited Moripe, showcasing the deep respect held for him by younger players. Fans also remembered another South African football great, Stanley ‘Screamer’ Tshabalala, who passed away earlier in 2024.
Moripe’s passing marks the end of an era for South African football. However, his legacy as a master of the game and a beloved figure in the sport will endure in the hearts of fans and the annals of football history.
