Wydad Athletic Club has reportedly made significant progress in their pursuit of Mamelodi Sundowns’ forward, Thembinkosi Lorch.
Wydad and Sundowns have agreed on a deal for Lorch, with the player set to join the Moroccan club on a short-term loan. However, the deal must be finalized quickly, as the Moroccan transfer window closes on January 31, and Lorch needs to be registered with Wydad by then.
If the move goes ahead, Lorch will reunite with his former coach, Rulani Mokwena, who managed him both at Orlando Pirates and Sundowns. It was Mokwena who played a key role in Lorch’s surprise transfer from Pirates to Sundowns in January 2024. However, Mokwena was dismissed from his role at Sundowns just months later, leaving Lorch struggling for regular game time.
This season has been tough for Lorch, who has made just six appearances for Sundowns. Now, Wydad is offering him a career lifeline with the chance to regain his form on a short-term deal.
Since joining Sundowns a year ago, the 31-year-old former Bafana Bafana international has scored seven goals in 27 matches. While Kaizer Chiefs had reportedly shown interest in Lorch, Sundowns ultimately chose to send him on loan to Wydad.
The reported agreement between the two clubs is a step closer to finalizing the move, with only a few days left before the window closes.
