CR Belouizdad striker Khanyisa Mayo has opened up about how close he came to signing for Kaizer Chiefs before making his move to the Algerian club.

Mayo, 26, made a high-profile transfer from Cape Town City to Belouizdad ahead of the 2024/25 season. The striker, who scored 10 league goals for City last season and shared the Golden Boot with Peter Shalulile the year before, will have a chance to return home, as Belouizdad was drawn into Orlando Pirates’ CAF Champions League group.

However, Mayo was also on the verge of joining Chiefs, the club his father, Patrick Mayo, had famously played for. Reflecting on the situation, Mayo revealed the deal almost went through. In an interview with his former teammate Michael Morton on Soccerbeat, he explained, “There was a good chance of that happening. When I had just signed the contract with CRB, that’s when Chiefs came knocking and said they were willing to offer this amount of money for me. It was just one hour after we had submitted the CRB documents.”

Since moving to Belouizdad, Mayo has made seven appearances for his new team. However, the club has had a challenging start to the 2024/25 season, winning only one of their first seven league matches and drawing four of those games 0-0.
