Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Kermit Erasmus has finally addressed the growing speculation about a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs. Since his departure from Pirates in June, the 34-year-old, who has also represented Bafana Bafana, has been heavily linked with a move to Naturena.
In an interview with Soccerbeat, Erasmus discussed why he decided against joining Cape Town Spurs or Chippa United, and gave insight into his current situation as a free agent.
“I’m always staying ready. Those who understand football know what I’m about,” Erasmus said when asked about a possible move to Kaizer Chiefs.
Erasmus confirmed that he trained with Cape Town Spurs for a week after having a conversation with the club’s chairman, Ari Efstathiou. “I spoke to the chairman and had a good chat with him. The coach wanted to know my intentions, and that was just to keep fit. They were happy with what they saw in such a short space of time – I only trained for a week,” he explained.
However, despite the positive training experience, Erasmus made it clear that the offer presented by the club didn’t meet his expectations. “From the offer presented through my agent, it just wasn’t worth my time. The chairman opened his door to me, and if I ever want to come back to work with the strikers, he knows I’ve always appreciated that,” he added.
Erasmus reflected on his time training with Spurs, saying it was a great opportunity to be around football again, but the offer didn’t align with what he had in mind. “It’s not that I wasn’t happy with the offer, it just wasn’t agreed on,” he clarified.
As a free agent, the idea of him joining Kaizer Chiefs is still on the table, but the chances of it happening are slim. Given Erasmus’ age and the challenges of his second stint with Pirates, it’s unclear whether he would make the move to Amakhosi. If he does join Chiefs, he would join a rare group of players who have represented all three of South Africa’s top clubs.
For now, it remains to be seen whether the striker will get an offer he deems worthwhile, but his future in South African football continues to spark interest.
