Kenya’s national team coach, Engin Firat, has expressed frustration with the country’s football federation following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). After Kenya’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe, Firat vented his dissatisfaction with the state of Kenyan football, emphasizing that the country needs to address long-standing issues within the football infrastructure before aiming for AFCON qualification.
Firat pointed out that Kenya has historically struggled with a lack of support, including the absence of proper training facilities and local matches, with the team unable to play at home for over three years. He questioned the Football Association’s commitment, stating that mere desires for success are not enough without addressing the core issues that hinder progress. Firat’s blunt message was clear: until these problems are solved, Kenya will continue to struggle to qualify for major tournaments.
On a more positive note, Firat praised Zimbabwe’s national team for their progress under coach Michael Nees, especially for the tactical approach and the inclusion of Khama Billiat, who returned from retirement. He highlighted Billiat’s role in controlling the game and facilitating transitions, which has made Zimbabwe a stronger and more competitive side. Firat believes Zimbabwe, with their solid defense and quick transitions, will perform well in AFCON and potentially advance out of their group.
