Soweto Derby Head-to-Head
Orlando Pirates have had the upper hand in recent encounters with Kaizer Chiefs. They’ve won the last three meetings across all competitions, including the most recent 3-2 victory in the league back in March 2024, with Monnapule Saleng scoring twice. That win ended a surprising five-match winning streak for Chiefs in league Soweto Derbies. The two teams will face off again on Saturday, February 1, at Orlando Stadium, kicking off at 15:30.
Wandile Duba to Miss the Derby
Unfortunately, young star Wandile Duba will be sidelined for over a month after picking up an injury in a match against Free Agents. As a result, he will miss the upcoming Soweto Derby.
Best Chiefs XI?
A potential starting XI for Kaizer Chiefs could look like this:
- Goalkeeper: Fiacre Ntwari
- Defenders: Njabulo Blom, Inacio Miguel, Rushwin Dortley, Bradley Cross
- Midfielders: Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Thabo Cele
- Forwards: Glody Lilepo, Mduduzi Shabalala, Gaston Sirino
- Striker: Wandile Duba (when fit)
With Njabulo Blom moving to right-back, Chiefs tend to play more narrowly, but it allows them to control possession better. Young talents like Mduduzi Shabalala and Wandile Duba have become key players, so the team’s formation will likely revolve around them. Given his price tag of R9.6 million, Glody Lilepo will likely be expected to make an immediate impact, starting regularly to justify that investment.
