Kaizer Chiefs’ sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Junior, has responded to recent claims suggesting that other PSL clubs are hindering the Soweto giants’ efforts to make moves in the transfer market. Motaung firmly rejected these accusations, emphasizing that all clubs in the league are partners, not competitors.
“To be honest, I don’t even entertain such allegations. Every other club is a partner to us in this league. We are stakeholders together. We need each other. They need us, and we need them. It’s all about negotiations and working together,” Motaung explained.
He went on to highlight that while clubs will always have their own goals—like wanting to retain their best players—negotiations are just a natural part of football business. “If someone came to me and asked to buy Shabalala, I’d say no. It’s simply how the business works. Everyone has their objectives, and we all have our targets. We engage in discussions with respect, and that’s the essence of the game, which you see all over the world.”
This discussion comes after Kaizer Chiefs’ attempts to sign Asenele Velebayi from Cape Town Spurs fell through, followed by Polokwane City’s refusal to sell Oswin Appollis. However, as Motaung pointed out, it’s entirely understandable for clubs to want to hold on to their top talents.
Meanwhile, Chiefs have reportedly informed injury-prone midfielder George Matlou that he will need to prove himself in the remaining matches of the season if he wants to secure a contract extension. According to a Siya source, the ball is now in Matlou’s court.
“The club has made it clear to him that the next games will determine his future at Kaizer Chiefs,” the source revealed. “They understand that his injuries have impacted his time at the club, but the technical team is giving him the opportunity to play again. Now, it’s up to him to prove himself and fight for his career here.”
Matlou has been given a chance to earn an extension, but if he doesn’t make a positive impact, he could find himself looking for a new club at the end of the season. Chiefs have clearly communicated what is expected of him: to perform and demonstrate his value on the field.
So, Matlou’s fate at Chiefs is entirely in his hands as he faces a critical period to showcase his worth.
