Kaizer Chiefs defender Thatayaone “TT” Ditlhokwe is set to make a move to Libyan giants Al Ittihad in a deal worth around R15.7 million, bringing an end to his time at the Soweto club.
The 26-year-old Botswana international has been a solid performer for Chiefs this season, appearing 11 times and registering two assists in the Betway Premiership. Although he is primarily a centre-back, Ditlhokwe has mostly been deployed as a left-back under coach Nasreddine Nabi.
Having joined Chiefs from SuperSport United on January 19, 2023, on a four-year contract, Ditlhokwe was initially uncertain of his future following the arrival of Rushwin Dortley and Bradley Cross. However, he fought for his place and solidified his spot as a starter.
Why is Chiefs letting Ditlhokwe go? Despite Ditlhokwe’s improved performances, Chiefs seem willing to let him go, especially since he was signed on a free transfer. This move aligns with Nabi’s original intentions, as the coach had reportedly planned to part ways with him before the season started. However, after Cross struggled to adapt, Ditlhokwe stepped in and delivered dependable performances.

With Al Ittihad now showing interest, Chiefs are reportedly negotiating a deal that could see the defender stay in Libya until 2027.
Al Ittihad’s ambitions The 19-time Libyan Premier League champions are aiming to strengthen their squad for both domestic and continental challenges. Ditlhokwe will join his Botswana national team teammate Tumisang Orebonye, who recently made the switch from AS FAR Rabat. Al Ittihad has also made waves in the market by securing Egyptian striker Mahmoud Kahraba from Al Ahly. The club, currently sitting fourth in the Libya West Group, is determined to regain its domestic dominance and compete in continental competitions.
Chiefs’ left-back situation If Ditlhokwe departs, Nabi will need to rely on Bradley Cross and Happy Mashiane at left-back. The coach has expressed concerns over squad depth in this area, noting that the current players in that position are filling in out of necessity.
“If there is an opportunity or a transfer window that allows us to strengthen the team, we feel we are in the right direction even if we were not consistent,” said Nabi. “We should have had a left-back that is a specialist in his position. The one who plays there – even though he performs amazingly well – was tried out of necessity.”
Ditlhokwe’s legacy at Chiefs Despite limited opportunities early in the season, Ditlhokwe has proven his value. His first appearance came on November 2, 2024, after Inacio was sent off against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout. Since then, Ditlhokwe has started in eight matches across all competitions, slowly making the left-back role his own.
On the international front, Ditlhokwe has already achieved significant success. Appointed as Botswana’s captain at just 21, he led the team to their second-ever AFCON qualification, playing a key role throughout the campaign.
As negotiations between Chiefs and Al Ittihad progress, Ditlhokwe’s departure from South Africa seems imminent. With Chiefs known for allowing players to pursue better career prospects, his time at the club may soon come to a close.
