Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro believes Kaizer Chiefs have a crucial part to play if the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership is to be challenged.
Pirates Need Help Keeping Up
After securing third place again behind Sundowns and Chiefs, Riveiro was asked about what it would take to catch the league leaders.
He feels it’s time for clubs like Chiefs to rise to the challenge.
“Things are slowly changing, but this kind of shift doesn’t happen overnight — it takes years, not months,” Riveiro told KickOff.
He praised Sundowns as a powerhouse: “They’re a strong team, and everyone knows they’re set up to dominate the league from start to finish.”
Riveiro added that Sundowns set an incredibly high bar in terms of consistency. “They force the rest of us to keep pace with them in points. It’s tough to keep up with that level.”
He was clear that this isn’t just a Pirates issue, but a challenge for the whole league. “Sundowns have pushed the points needed to win the title up to around 70. It used to be 60. That makes it even harder to compete.”
