Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro shared his perspective on his team’s first loss of the Betway Premiership season, following their 1-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC at Orlando Stadium. The loss marked the end of Pirates’ unbeaten run in their first seven league matches.
The Spanish tactician acknowledged Stellenbosch’s performance, which came as a form of revenge after Pirates had defeated them earlier this season to claim the MTN8 title. Speaking to iDiskiTimes, Riveiro highlighted key moments that led to his team’s downfall, particularly missed opportunities early in the game.
“We started the game well, just as we had planned,” Riveiro explained. “The first 10 to 15 minutes were strong for us, with clear chances from Monyane and Hotto inside the box. If we had converted those, it could have been a different story.”
He also noted that Pirates struggled to maintain control in critical areas of the pitch. “We couldn’t take advantage in the central corridors, and the dry pitch during the daytime made it harder to play with precision. We lacked the sharpness needed to break down their defense,” Riveiro added.
Despite the setback, Pirates remain focused on regaining momentum as they continue their league campaign.
