Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has expressed no ill feelings toward coach Nasreddine Nabi and his technical team for their decision to take the club in a new direction. After a remarkable 25-year journey with the Amakhosi, Khune parted ways with the club during the off-season, as his contract expired. Chiefs brought in Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy to bolster their goalkeeping department, joining Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma, and Bontle Molefe.
Reflecting on his departure, Khune explained that he understood and supported the club’s vision. “I wasn’t upset,” he said. “The club communicated the direction they were heading in, and I accepted it. It’s nothing personal. I’m still family to Kaizer Chiefs and always will be.” Khune had previously been in talks for a non-playing role within the club before the 2023/24 season began. However, his decision to delay retirement meant those plans had to be paused.
The veteran goalkeeper acknowledged the necessity of keeping his options open while maintaining a strong relationship with the club. “If I sign as a footballer for another team, I can’t be involved with Chiefs at the same time. But we haven’t cut ties. We’re still in discussions to establish a future working relationship in a different capacity,” he said.
Khune’s involvement in other ventures, such as becoming a shareholder in Top Bet, indicates a potential transition beyond professional football. While his contributions to South African football are unparalleled, his decision suggests a readiness to explore life after his playing days while keeping a door open for collaboration with Chiefs.
