Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune has commended Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams for his impressive rise to global recognition, highlighting the goalkeeper’s hard work and determination. Khune, regarded as one of South Africa’s greatest ever goalkeepers, shared his admiration for Williams, who spent years learning from the iconic Chiefs stopper before earning his place as the country’s undisputed number one.
Since taking over the role in 2019 during the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Williams has made his mark on both the national team and club football. His move from SuperSport United to Mamelodi Sundowns marked a turning point in his career, and he has since enjoyed remarkable success, including winning the Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season award, a feat not achieved by a goalkeeper since Khune. Williams’ international recognition peaked when he was nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or, where he finished ninth for the Yashin Trophy, an award for the world’s best goalkeeper, which was retained by Argentina’s Emi Martinez.
Khune shared his pride in Williams’ achievements, reflecting on their years together competing for the number one jersey for Bafana Bafana. “I was with him for so many years competing for the number one jersey for Bafana, and I think he gave me the respect, he listened to all the advice I gave him,” Khune said.
Khune further praised Williams for his hard work and dedication, especially as he earned recognition on the global stage. “He’s now being recognised in the world, at the Ballon d’Or. I think he deserves it, he worked hard for it. There’s been talk that he was robbed, but he was competing with the best in the world,” he added.
The Chiefs legend also highlighted Williams’ achievements in Africa, pointing out his stellar performances at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Bafana Bafana and his success with Sundowns. “If it was the CAF awards, I would have given it to him. He did well at AFCON with Bafana and for Sundowns. He’s competing with players who feature in World Cups, Champions League, Euros, Europa League, and more,” Khune said.
Despite his growing recognition, Khune urged Williams to remain humble and focused on his development. “He just needs to keep his feet firmly on the ground and keep working hard. They know who Ronwen Williams is worldwide, and I’m sure he’ll be back at the Ballon d’Or awards representing South Africa very well.”
Khune also praised Williams’ character, both on and off the field, calling him a hard-working individual who is always eager to learn. “He’s a great guy on and off the field. He’s someone who never stops listening, never stops learning,” Khune said when addressing the frequent comparisons between the two goalkeepers on social media.
