SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has provided insight into the unexpected transfer of Tashreeq Morris to Kaizer Chiefs, revealing the factors behind the move and why the club couldn’t stop it. Morris’ time at SuperSport was brief, lasting just four months after he signed as a free agent in October. Although he managed to score twice in ten appearances, Morris couldn’t resist a tempting offer from Chiefs, which Matthews admitted was far too financially rewarding for SuperSport to match.
Matthews explained that the difference in financial packages played a significant role in Morris’ decision. “Morris came to me and said, ‘Kaizer Chiefs want me, and here’s what they’re offering.’ I simply couldn’t offer him half of that,” Matthews said, as quoted by FARPost. He also acknowledged that it made little sense to keep a player who might feel resentful over losing out on such a big opportunity. “Should I have a disgruntled Tashreeq, who feels he could have been earning more than double what we offered?” Matthews questioned.
As Morris moves to Chiefs, SuperSport received Christian Saile in return. Matthews believes Saile’s arrival will strengthen their attacking options, offering a much-needed speed element that was missing from the team. “Saile brings pace, something we’ve been lacking,” Matthews said. “He can get behind defences and break the line—something players like Samir Nurkovic and Bradley Grobler couldn’t do.”
While Chiefs benefit from an experienced striker in Morris, SuperSport’s acquisition of Saile adds a crucial dimension to their attack. Matthews sees the deal as a win-win situation for both clubs, with each addressing their specific needs. Only time will reveal whether this trade will ultimately benefit both teams, but for now, both clubs appear content with the outcome.
