Tebogo Langerman, the former Mamelodi Sundowns defender, has opened up about his experience buying his first house and the unexpected consequences that followed.
The 38-year-old, who enjoyed a successful nine-year career at Sundowns and later a brief stint at Moroka Swallows before retiring, shared his story on the Trap and Pass podcast. Langerman recounted purchasing a R3 million home in Ruimsig in the mid-2010s, which marked a significant milestone in his life. However, he revealed that things quickly went downhill after the purchase.
“Before the house, I didn’t have anything. Then, I bought this massive house with a huge swimming pool that could fit all the Sundowns players. That’s where everything started going wrong,” Langerman said. “The same day I got the keys, I threw a housewarming party, inviting everyone except the coaches. At the time, I had R570,000 in my account after we had won a trophy, but I can’t remember which one it was.”
Langerman admitted that he went all out, spending over R400,000 on parties and friends. “I was living the high life, throwing P. Diddy-style parties. No phones allowed, no photos. I didn’t even have furniture yet, but the party went on,” he shared.
The former Bafana Bafana player also confessed that his purchase strained his relationship with former Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane. “Buying that house ruined my career. It affected my relationship with the coach. He called a meeting after I bought it, and it felt like he didn’t even know how I managed to buy the house. I wasn’t sure if I bought it on my own or if the club helped me,” Langerman explained.
He didn’t go into further detail about what happened to the house but promised to return to Trap and Pass to share more of his story. During his career at Sundowns and SuperSport United, Langerman collected seven league titles and became a fixture in South African football.
