Golden Arrows secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Royal AM in the latest KwaZulu-Natal derby on Tuesday evening, claiming the bragging rights in what was an action-packed match at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.
The game started with both teams eager to take control, but it was Golden Arrows who made the breakthrough in the 15th minute. Striker Knox Mutizwa was the hero for Arrows, rising above the defense to score with a powerful header from a well-placed cross. The early lead gave Arrows confidence, and they looked to control possession and dictate play.
However, Royal AM quickly responded, and in the 28th minute, captain Thabo Matlaba pounced on a defensive mistake by Arrows to level the score with a calm finish. The goal revitalized Royal AM, and the match quickly became an open, high-paced affair with both teams creating chances.
Golden Arrows regained their advantage just before halftime, with Mutizwa striking again in the 40th minute. This time, the striker took a shot from outside the box, and his clinical finish gave Arrows a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, Royal AM came out strong and equalized once more in the 55th minute with a stunning free-kick from Ricardo Nascimento. The expertly placed shot beat the Arrows’ wall and goalkeeper to make it 2-2, reigniting the contest.
With the match on a knife-edge, it was Golden Arrows who found the winner in the 72nd minute. Mutizwa completed his hat-trick with a composed finish after being played in with a brilliant through ball from Siphelele Magubane. His third goal sealed the win for Arrows, making it 3-2.
Royal AM pushed hard for another equalizer, but Golden Arrows’ defense held firm, and goalkeeper Sifiso Mlungwana made key saves in the final stages to secure the victory.
The 3-2 win gave Golden Arrows all three points and the bragging rights in the KwaZulu-Natal derby. Mutizwa’s hat-trick was the standout moment of the match, and he was named player of the match for his outstanding performance.
Coach Lehlohonolo Seema praised his side’s composure after the match. “It was a tough game, and we had to stay focused, especially after they equalized,” Seema said. “Knox was outstanding today, and his goals made the difference. This is an important win for us, and we will continue to improve from here.”
The victory lifts Golden Arrows up the league table, and they will look to build on this momentum as they move forward in the season. Royal AM, meanwhile, will be eager to bounce back after a disappointing result.
