Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has shed light on the government’s decision to allocate R5 million to support Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana. The gesture, according to McKenzie, is aimed at bolstering South African football and ensuring both national teams have the resources necessary to achieve success on the global stage.

The financial intervention comes at a crucial time as both teams are preparing for major international competitions. Bafana Bafana is gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while Banyana Banyana has ongoing commitments in continental and international tournaments.

McKenzie emphasized the importance of investing in sports as a means of inspiring the nation and elevating South Africa’s status in global football. He added that the funding will not only cover immediate logistical and operational needs but also help lay the foundation for long-term success.

“This isn’t just about money; it’s about belief in our teams and their potential to unite and inspire the nation,” said McKenzie.

The financial boost has been welcomed by the South African Football Association (SAFA), who acknowledged the challenges of financing the two national teams and expressed gratitude for the government’s support. SAFA President Danny Jordaan highlighted how the contribution will alleviate financial pressures and allow the teams to focus on their preparations and performances.

As the teams set their sights on future milestones, this partnership between the government and SAFA signals a renewed commitment to South African football and its role in uniting and uplifting the nation.
