Kaizer Chiefs will be leaving the recently closed transfer window feeling positive after some solid additions to their squad.
Heading into January, the club was focused on adding experience, and they certainly achieved that goal. Chiefs secured the signings of DR Congo international winger Glody Lilepo, striker Tashreeq Morris, and midfielder Thabo Cele. Lilepo and Morris have both signed 2-and-a-half-year contracts, while Cele has committed to a 3-and-a-half-year deal. However, there were a couple of notable players they failed to land, both from rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
It was widely reported that Chiefs were heavily interested in Thembinkosi Lorch, but Sundowns wasn’t willing to strengthen a direct competitor and blocked the deal. Lorch is now set to join Wydad Casablanca on loan, where he’ll reunite with his former coach, Rulani Mokwena.
The other player Chiefs had their eyes on was Terrence Mashego. According to reports, talks between the two clubs were held, but a deal never materialized. Soccer-Laduma provided more insight, revealing that the issue wasn’t a difference in terms or player availability, but rather a financial one. “It’s true that Chiefs approached Sundowns for Mashego. It wasn’t Sundowns putting him on the market. The stumbling block was Chiefs’ inability to meet the financial demand. The offer was reportedly under R10 million,” a source said.
Despite having signed two left-backs during the window, Chiefs still appear to have some concerns over their defensive options. Bradley Cross has split opinion among the fanbase, and Bongani Sam was initially expected to be loaned out to Magesi FC, though that move fell through. As it stands, Chiefs will rely on these players, along with Happy Mashiane, to fill the gap.
Now that the window has closed, Chiefs supporters are left to reflect. Do you think the club should have made the financial push to sign Mashego, or are you satisfied with the squad as it is? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below!
