Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has stood by young midfielder Samkelo Zwane after criticism surfaced following the team’s 4-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday. The defeat not only highlighted Chiefs’ ongoing struggles but also dashed another opportunity to end the club’s long-standing trophy drought.
In the aftermath, Zwane was singled out by some for his performance, but Nabi quickly defended the young player. He argued that placing blame on younger players is unjust, especially in high-stakes games where more experienced players should lead by example. “Yes, some of the youngsters didn’t meet expectations,” Nabi admitted. “But in big matches like these, experienced players have to step up, and that didn’t happen today.”
Nabi emphasized that younger players like Zwane look up to seasoned teammates for guidance, especially in challenging matches. He reminded senior players of their responsibility to set the standard, saying, “They need to understand the weight of this club’s history. No one, no matter how talented, is above the team. In tough moments, they have to take charge.”
Nabi further noted that Zwane, still early in his career, has years to develop and improve. “He wasn’t the worst performer out there; there were others with much more experience who fell short,” he added, underscoring the importance of seasoned players taking accountability.
With a break in their schedule, Chiefs will look to regroup before their next fixture against Richards Bay on November 27.
