A vigilant tip-off from a concerned community member led to a significant bust by Bela-Bela police, resulting in the seizure of over R17,000 worth of illicit cigarettes and the arrest of a 48-year-old man on Thursday, January 16.

The operation began when local authorities received information about a suspicious vehicle, a white Hyundai Accent, reportedly involved in illegal activities in the Tinmyne area. According to Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, the vehicle was traveling from Modimolle and heading towards Bela-Bela. Acting swiftly, officers set up a roadblock along the R101 near a filling station, where they successfully intercepted the vehicle.

Upon stopping the car, the 48-year-old driver consented to a search, leading officers to discover that the vehicle was packed with 155 cartons and 270 loose packets of illicit cigarettes. The total value of the contraband was estimated at over R17,000.

Further investigation revealed that the smuggled goods had originated from Musina in the Vhembe District and were destined for Pretoria in Gauteng. The suspect was promptly arrested on charges of possession of illicit cigarettes and is expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court soon.

As the investigation unfolds, police are working to identify and dismantle the broader criminal network behind the smuggling operation. This successful interception serves as a reminder of the crucial role played by the community in combatting illicit trade and ensuring public safety.
