Julius Malema, firebrand leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has once again been barred from entering the United Kingdom—this time over what British authorities call his “extremist” views and rhetoric that pose a threat to public safety.
The UK Home Office formally denied Malema a visa, citing his vocal support for Hamas—a group officially designated as a terrorist organization by the UK—and a track record of statements deemed to incite racial hatred and glorify violence. The decision follows a delayed visa application in May 2025 tied to a planned appearance at a Cambridge University conference, which Malema earlier dismissed as a politically motivated snub. This latest ban makes it official.
At the core of the UK’s concerns is a disturbing pattern of inflammatory language. The Home Office’s letter referenced Malema’s notorious 2016 statement that the EFF was “not calling for the slaughter of white people—at least for now,” as well as his unsettling 2022 court testimony, where he bluntly refused to rule out making such calls in the future: “I can’t guarantee I won’t say it. I am not a prophet.”
Fueling further alarm were Malema’s remarks in October 2023 during a protest outside the Israeli Embassy in Pretoria. There, he vowed to “arm Hamas” if the EFF ever came to power and defended the Hamas-led October 7 attack on Israel as “legitimate resistance.” These comments, the UK determined, cross the legal threshold of promoting terrorism and inciting violence, making Malema’s presence in Britain “not conducive to the public good.”
Under British immigration law, individuals who incite hatred or glorify terrorist activity can be refused entry. Malema’s repeat offense places him firmly on that list, dealing a blow not only to his international ambitions but also to his party’s broader efforts to position itself on the global stage.
While the EFF has yet to issue a formal response, the UK’s decisive move reinforces its hardline stance on political extremism—no matter how prominent the figure, and regardless of international fallout.
