Two women, arrested for allegedly drugging and robbing a 75-year-old pensioner in Verulam last November, have been granted bail following more than 50 days in custody. The accused, Rushendree Reddy, aged 39, and Indrani Moodley, 49, were apprehended after an elderly man reported being drugged and subsequently robbed in his own home.

The incident unfolded when the two women reportedly visited the pensioner’s residence under the pretense of offering to make him a cup of tea. After the man consumed the tea, which authorities believe was laced with a sedative, he lost consciousness. When he regained his senses, he discovered that his home had been ransacked, and the women had vanished. Surveillance footage later emerged, showing the mask-wearing suspects leaving the area.
Following a diligent investigation, Reaction Unit officers traced Reddy to her home in Chatsworth. They detained her after a brief standoff involving her son. Moodley was later located at her residence in Phoenix. Both women are now facing charges of robbery, with indications that this may not be their first offence of this nature. According to Prem Balram of the Reaction Unit, the duo has been linked to other similar robberies targeting elderly victims in KwaZulu-Natal.
At the Verulam Magistrate’s Court, Reddy was granted bail set at R10,000, while Moodley was given bail of R5,000. It remains unclear when they will return to court to face further proceedings. Authorities have expressed concern over the duo’s alleged modus operandi, with investigations continuing into whether they have been involved in other similar crimes.
