In a tragic and disturbing incident on Wednesday morning, emergency workers responded to the discovery of twin foetuses found dumped in a toilet at a private residence in Durban’s CBD. ALS Paramedics, who arrived at the scene in the South Beach area, were directed to the location by Durban Metro Police, who were already on-site alongside other emergency services. Upon their arrival, paramedics were shocked to find two foetuses, believed to be twins, and sadly, both were declared deceased at the scene.

Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, confirmed that the foetuses were discovered in a toilet at the residence on Monty Naicker Road. After assessing the situation, paramedics determined that there was no chance of saving the infants. The police immediately cordoned off the area, treating it as an active crime scene, and began an investigation. A search for the mother of the foetuses is currently underway as authorities attempt to determine how and why this tragic event occurred.

The discovery of the twins follows a similar incident just the day before when another foetus was found discarded in Morningside, Durban. In that case, the foetus was placed in a plastic bag and abandoned on the side of the road. These two incidents in quick succession highlight the disturbing rise in baby dumping cases in Durban, which have sparked widespread concern in the community.

Authorities are urging members of the public to report any cases of abandoned babies immediately and to make use of safe and legal alternatives for those in need. South African law allows mothers to hand over their newborns to authorities without facing any legal consequences, and there are designated safe places such as clinics and government institutions where babies can be safely surrendered. This legal provision is meant to prevent such tragic events and protect the welfare of vulnerable infants.

Jamieson emphasized the importance of utilizing these resources instead of resorting to dumping babies in unsafe and inhumane conditions. “Please approach your local government office or clinic for help,” he urged, reminding the public that there are always avenues available for those who may feel overwhelmed or unable to care for their child.

As the investigation continues, police are focusing their efforts on finding the mother and understanding the circumstances surrounding the baby dumping incidents. Meanwhile, the community remains in shock, with many expressing their horror at the recent events. The authorities are committed to finding justice for the innocent lives lost and to raising awareness about the need for proper care and compassion for those facing difficult situations.
