An investigation is underway after a violent confrontation between law enforcement and suspected illegal miners in Sabie, Mpumalanga, on Thursday, November 28. According to provincial police spokesman Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, officers were conducting a routine patrol near the New Village mining shaft when they came under fire from the miners. In response, the officers returned fire, leading to the deaths of three individuals believed to be involved in the illegal mining operation.

One officer sustained injuries in the exchange and was subsequently hospitalized for treatment. A case of attempted murder has been opened, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is overseeing the investigation into the incident.
