Buti Johannes Mkonza, the esteemed chairperson of the Ivory Park Taxi Association, has passed away at the age of 55 after a brief illness. His death, confirmed by South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) president Mothlabane Abnar Tsebe, occurred on Sunday, November 3, at Mediclinic Midstream Hospital. Mkonza was not only a prominent figure in the taxi industry but also the founder of BJM Coaches, which grew from a single taxi to a thriving fleet that included 80 buses and 30 mini-taxis. He was also a former chairperson of Santaco in Gauteng.

Mkonza’s passing has left a deep void in the taxi industry. Tsebe described him as a visionary leader, a pioneer, and a hero who had an immense impact on the industry through his mentorship, leadership, and dedication. His contributions to the sector, particularly in economic empowerment, have made him a beloved figure among his peers and colleagues. β€œWe are devastated by the loss of our beloved leader,” said Tsebe in a heartfelt tribute.

A memorial service will be held on November 7 at 12 noon at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Halfway House to honor Mkonza’s legacy. His family, colleagues, and the entire taxi industry have expressed their condolences, remembering him not only as a successful businessman but as a mentor who helped shape the future of the industry.
