Khotseng reported that the DB board and the external electrical box remain exposed, with the wires left disconnected, creating a hazardous situation.

Busisiwe Khotseng, a resident of the 15 Kildare Estate in Terenure, has been without electricity since November 12, after municipal workers determined that the cable supplying power to her home was faulty.

According to Khotseng, workers disconnected electricity from both the DB board and the external box attached to her house. She was told a technician would visit to pinpoint the fault’s exact location. However, when the technician arrived, he marked areas both inside and outside her yard but was unable to find the issue. The municipal workers responsible for digging then informed Khotseng that if the fault was inside her property, she would need to hire a private electrician.

“They couldn’t find the fault in the marked area, so they assumed the issue was under the boundary wall or inside my yard,” Khotseng said. “Without further explanation or paperwork, they closed up and left.”

To make matters worse, Khotseng noted that the DB board and external electrical box remain open, with the wires disconnected, leaving the situation unresolved. This has disrupted her family’s daily life, particularly affecting her children’s ability to study, as they can only do so during daylight hours.

I didn’t know that, as a resident, I would need to hire my own electrician to fix the issue,” she explained. Additionally, she expressed concerns about the potential risks of hiring an independent electrician and the possibility of further damage, which could affect not only her home but also her neighbors.

Khotseng is seeking clarification on the roles and responsibilities of both the municipality and residents in such situations. She has called for more guidance on how to proceed and ensure that similar issues are handled more effectively in the future.

The Kempton Express reached out to the city for comment on November 22, with a request for a response by November 25. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
