A criminal case has been opened against a 45-year-old teacher who is accused of an inappropriate act involving a Grade 11 student at Lufhereng Secondary School in Soweto. The incident, which occurred on February 13, 2025, is being thoroughly investigated by authorities.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed his deep concern and disappointment over the incident. “We are profoundly disturbed by this serious allegation against this educator,” Chiloane said. “Educators play an essential role in nurturing and guiding students, and such allegations are deeply troubling.”

In response to the situation, the teacher has been temporarily removed from his position at the school. Department spokesperson Steve Mabona explained that this decision was made to prioritize the well-being of the affected student and the entire school community. The department assured that all proper procedures would be followed as the investigation progresses.

Additionally, the department has arranged for a Psycho-Social Support Unit to offer counseling services to the learner, helping her cope with the emotional and psychological effects of the experience.

MEC Chiloane reiterated the department’s strong stance against any form of misconduct in schools. “We unequivocally condemn actions of this nature, and we trust that law enforcement will approach the case with the sensitivity and seriousness it deserves,” Chiloane said.

The Department of Education remains committed to ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. Any allegations of misconduct by educators will be taken very seriously and addressed accordingly.
