A tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon at Standard Bank’s offices on 30 Baker Street in Rosebank, where an employee fell to their death from the sixth floor. The event sent shockwaves through the bank, prompting an immediate investigation by both the police and the institution, IOL reports.
The incident occurred just before 5 PM, according to initial reports. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fall.
In a statement to IOL, Standard Bank spokesperson Ross Linstroom expressed the bank’s profound sadness over the loss. “Standard Bank is deeply saddened to confirm a tragic incident that resulted in a loss of life at one of our buildings. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues affected,” Linstroom said.
Emergency response teams are actively investigating the matter and providing necessary support services. Linstroom emphasised that employees who worked closely with the deceased, as well as those who witnessed the incident, are receiving wellness support. “We remain committed to supporting all those affected by this tragic incident and extend our deepest sympathies to the deceased’s loved ones,” he added.
Lieutenant Colonel Masondo elaborated on the ongoing investigation, stating, “Police have opened an inquest docket after an employee of the bank fell from the sixth floor of the building. An investigation is underway to determine what caused her to fall.” The identity of the deceased has not been released, as the bank and authorities focus on supporting those impacted by this tragedy.
