SAJBD Issues Urgent Advisory as South Africans Stranded in Israel Amid Ongoing Iranian Strikes

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) has issued an urgent advisory for South Africans currently stranded in Israel following Iranian missile strikes that have targeted civilian areas, severely disrupting air travel and halting outbound flights.

The ongoing attacks, which have heightened tensions in the region, have left numerous South Africans unable to leave Israel as planned. In response, the SAJBD has expressed solidarity with those affected and is working diligently to facilitate their safe return once the situation stabilizes.

Stay Put, Remain Safe

In its statement, the Board strongly advised against attempting to leave Israel via neighboring countries, citing significant safety risks posed by the volatile situation. Supported by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other international entities, the recommendation is clear: remain in Israel until air travel can safely resume.

The SAJBD is collaborating with Ethiopian Airlines, a key partner that previously assisted South Africans during the COVID-19 pandemic, to arrange repatriation flights as soon as Israeli authorities grant clearance. Ethiopian Airlines has assured the SAJBD of its full support in the effort, with plans to help evacuate South Africans when the time is right.

Next Steps for South African Travelers

South Africans who are currently booked on or wish to fly via Ethiopian Airlines are urged to send their contact details to [email protected]. Those with alternative travel plans should immediately contact their travel agents to rebook flights, in anticipation of the eventual resumption of flights.

The SAJBD’s coordinated efforts reflect a dedicated response to support the South African community in Israel during this crisis, as they work tirelessly to ensure the safety and swift return of citizens when conditions allow. The Board also extended its prayers to all individuals in Israel affected by the violence, as the region faces an uncertain and challenging time.
