Thulani Mngomezulu, the defence lawyer representing one of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, has tragically passed away. His family confirmed his untimely death in a statement on December 10, 2024, stating that he died in the early hours at a hospital in Vosloorus. Mngomezulu, who had been absent from court for over a month due to illness, was a prominent figure in the ongoing legal battle surrounding the 2014 murder of South African football star Senzo Meyiwa. His death has come as a shock to the legal community, as well as to those following the high-profile case.

Mngomezulu had been representing Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, one of the men accused of being involved in Meyiwa’s killing. Sibiya, who is alleged to have confessed to being part of the group that shot Meyiwa at the home of singer Kelly Khumalo, had been at the centre of the trial. Mngomezulu’s role in defending his client was crucial in a case that has captivated the nation for nearly a decade. The trial, which has been plagued by delays and controversies, continues to be a focal point in South Africa’s legal and public discourse.

In his family’s statement, they expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of their loved one, describing Mngomezulu as a devoted husband, father, and son. They asked for privacy during this difficult time, requesting space to grieve and make decisions regarding the coming days. The family also expressed gratitude for the support and compassion they have received from friends and colleagues. Mngomezulu’s passing comes at a particularly challenging time, as the Meyiwa trial is ongoing, with many awaiting the final resolution of the case that has long dominated headlines.

Mngomezulu’s recent absence from court had raised questions, with reports indicating that his health had been in decline for some time. However, his death also comes against the backdrop of a turbulent year for the advocate. In January 2024, it was reported that Mngomezulu was facing serious legal issues of his own, including charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and resisting arrest, stemming from a domestic dispute with his wife. The charges were related to an incident in November 2022, where Mngomezulu allegedly attempted to burn down his house with his wife and children inside. Despite attempts to have the charges dropped, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) decided to continue with the prosecution, citing concerns for the safety of his family.

The charges against Mngomezulu had raised significant public attention, particularly due to the nature of the allegations and their potential impact on his involvement in the Meyiwa trial. The NPA spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, confirmed that Mngomezulu had fought the charges in court, but the case was moving forward in an effort to protect his wife and children. The domestic dispute was a stark contrast to Mngomezulu’s professional life, where he had been a respected advocate in the criminal justice system. His personal and professional challenges had cast a shadow over his later years, but his contributions to the Meyiwa case were still pivotal.

As South Africa continues to wait for justice in the Meyiwa case, Mngomezulu’s death will undoubtedly leave a void in the defence team’s strategy. His passing may also affect the progress of the trial, which has already faced numerous delays since Meyiwa’s tragic death in 2014. The legal community will no doubt reflect on Mngomezulu’s role in the case, as well as his career as a defence lawyer. His family, however, is now focused on mourning their loss and navigating the difficult days ahead.
