The Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal highlands are bracing for another round of moderate snowfall this weekend as temperatures are expected to dip significantly, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS). This comes shortly after the region experienced an unusual snowstorm between September 19 and 22, 2024, which left highways covered in thick snow and forced the closure of major routes, including the N3 highway. SAWS has issued this alert as part of its efforts to keep residents informed and prepared for potentially hazardous conditions.

The recent snowfall had a profound impact, particularly on the N3 highway, which only reopened on September 23 after being impassable over the weekend. Heavy snow accumulation led to road closures that left numerous motorists stranded, with some enduring prolonged exposure to the severe cold. Tragically, two lives were lost due to hypothermia, underscoring the dangers posed by the extreme weather. Local farmers from the areas around Harrismith and Tugela took it upon themselves to help clear parts of the snow-covered highway, but conditions remained hazardous until the weather improved.

Motorists who had no choice but to navigate the icy terrain faced formidable challenges as visibility was reduced, and roads were blanketed by up to 50 cm of snow over the Drakensberg region, with nearly 40 cm reported along the N3 between Tugela and Harrismith, including the notoriously treacherous Van Reenen’s Pass. SAWS and road authorities have advised travelers to use extra caution, especially during nighttime, as temperatures are expected to remain low and visibility could quickly deteriorate. To minimize risk, officials recommended that the N3 be used primarily during daylight hours when road conditions are more manageable.

Despite warnings and fair-weather advisories, many still attempted journeys through the affected routes, potentially unaware of the severity of the situation. As another cold front and a cut-off low pressure system approach, SAWS urges all travelers and residents in high-lying areas to be prepared, avoid unnecessary travel, and heed weather updates closely. With the potential for further snowfall, the importance of staying informed and cautious cannot be overstated, especially as winter conditions linger unusually late into the season.
