The Gauteng SAPS has made significant progress in combating crime, with 1,587 arrests linked to gang activity. These include 65 for murder, 87 for attempted murder, and 214 for illegal firearms possession. The police also addressed 1,221 drug offenses and shut down 10 drug labs with the help of the Hawks and other law enforcement agencies. Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni praised these efforts in a recent operational review.
Illegal immigration remains a major challenge in Gauteng, with 3,657 illegal immigrants arrested in the past six months. The ongoing Operation Shanela continues to remove criminals, illegal firearms, and illicit substances from the streets. Recent operations, like the roadblock in Clayville, strengthen local police stations such as Ivory Park, ensuring safer communities.
In addition to tackling crime, the SAPS is focusing on safety in schools. The department is addressing concerns about unsafe food being sold in school shops and launched the Adopt-a-Cop program to improve partnerships with school management. With the festive season approaching, Mthombeni assured the public that the SAPS is ready to tackle seasonal crimes, such as drunk driving.
