The South African comedy world is mourning the loss of Ebenhaezer ‘Ebby’ Dibakwane, a talented young comedian who took his own life after a long battle with depression. Ebby’s passing has left his friends, family, and fans reeling, but his legacy of laughter and love will live on [1].

At his memorial service, attended by industry heavyweights like David Kau and Loyiso Gola, Ebby’s friends and peers remembered him as a complex and multifaceted person. They spoke candidly about his struggles with mental health, but also celebrated his infectious charisma, empathy, and talent.

Mojak Lehoko, a fellow comedian and friend, recalled how Ebby built a community of friends who appreciated him for who he was. “Everyone here is a reflection of how he built communities with his presence and how he touched people. Not just with his work but the person he was,” Lehoko said.

Chris Forest, another close friend and comedian, remembered Ebby as a brother. “I have lost a brother; we have all lost such a talented human who had a bright future,” Forest said.

As the comedy world comes to terms with Ebby’s passing, his friends and family are using his legacy to raise awareness about mental health and the importance of seeking help. “It is our prayer that this tragedy may remind all of us of the need to look out for each other while taking care of our mental health, including seeking professional help where necessary,” Ebby’s family said in a statement.
