The 2024 matric exams have concluded, marking a major milestone for thousands of students across South Africa. The National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams wrapped up on 28 November, with candidates completing their final papers in Computer Applications Technology and Information Technology. Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, praised the logistics and efforts involved in administering the exams, which included over 727,000 full-time candidates and more than 155,000 part-time candidates.
While the overall administration of the exams was smooth, there were disruptions such as protests and inclement weather in certain regions. In the Eastern Cape, flooding prevented 319 students from writing their exams, though contingency plans are in place to allow for rewrites. Gwarube acknowledged the challenges, particularly the tragic gang rapes of female students in the Eastern Cape, and called for greater safety and protection for students.
Looking ahead, Gwarube highlighted the importance of the marking process, which began on 27 November with over 50,000 markers involved. She emphasized the need for consistency, fairness, and accuracy in marking, with results expected to be released in January 2025. The department has already held several meetings to ensure marking guidelines are finalized and the process remains transparent.
With the exams now behind them, Gwarube urged students to celebrate responsibly. As part of the “Pens Down” celebrations, she advised matriculants to avoid alcohol abuse, urging them to celebrate their achievements in a safe and responsible manner.
