Today, hundreds of mourners have gathered at Durban’s International Convention Centre to pay their last respects to the late Pravin Gordhan, a veteran ANC leader and former government minister who left an indelible mark on South Africa’s politics ¹. Gordhan passed away on September 13, 2024, at the age of 75, after battling illness.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral Category 2, honouring Gordhan’s legacy as a struggle stalwart and cabinet veteran. The funeral service, attended by dignitaries and ordinary citizens alike, features ceremonial elements performed by the South African Police Service.
Gordhan’s illustrious career spanned several key roles, including Minister of Finance (2009-2014 and 2015-2017), Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (2014-2015), and Minister of Public Enterprises (February 2018-March 2024). He also served as Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) from 1999
At a memorial service held by the ANC in Durban, provincial chair Siboniso Duma reflected on Gordhan’s remarkable attributes: “He was a persuader, disciplined in thought and action, fearless, and a leader who could give and take advice.” These qualities, Duma noted, have left a lasting impact on the country, shaking the very foundations of South African society.
